DeBrular operated a filling station and a restaurant in Greenwood. On May
18, 1934 Frank Dotson ate dinner there. From the Diary of Nancy Clark Dotson 1904 - 1946 Page 257 Rosetta Margaret "Maggie" Dotson passed away on June 27, 1934 of a heart attack. Funeral services were held at the home. Burial was at the Greenwood Cemetery. From the Diary of Nancy Clark Dotson 1904 - 1946 Page 261 The school paper points out the since the books in the old library was destroyed there has not been any cases of Scarlet Fever. They ask all to do what they can to make a special effort to keep the new library free of communicable germs. The Greenwood School News September 29, 1934 - Volume 2, page 1 The school newsletter reports that each morning they have been reading a few verses from the New Testament. Many have been trying to name all 27 books in the New Testament. This is not a compulsory event but many have chosen to participate. It reports that the squirrels have a good chance to live and be healthy. The cost is still 25 cents per year. The Greenwood School News September 29, 1934 - Volume 2, page 5 The school newsletter states that the Board of Education is going to build a fire escape. The Greenwood School News November 15, 1934 - Volume 2, page 8 Mathias Young passed away on January 26, 1935. He was buried in Salem. He owned a large general-purpose store near the railroad in Greenwood. He was a very successful and prosperous businessman and the President of the County Commission of Doddridge County for several years. From the Diary of Nancy Clark Dotson 1904 - 1946 Page 281 Duane Scott Ellifritt was born to the union of Victor and Gussie Hudkins Ellifritt on February 12, 1935. Book 4 Page 55 Doddridge County Reginald Rochester Dotson passed to the other side on September 22, 1935 in Pennsboro, Ritchie County. He and Margaret are at rest in the Greenwood cemetery. The school newsletter states that the school will have 2 new teachers this year. They are Miss Chelsa Ashburn, who taught at Arnolds Creek School last year. She will teach the 5th & 6th grades and Miss Edna C. Lowther, who was the Assistant County Superintendent last year, will be teaching the 3rd & 4th grades. Miss Mabel Ramsey and William Rollins will have the same positions as last year. The Greenwood School News September 30, 1935 - Volume 3, #1, page 2 Reverend & Mrs. David Sayre are moving this week to Smithburg. Reverend & Mrs. Hollingsworth of Reedy will be their replacement. The Greenwood School News September 30, 1935 - Volume 3, page 6 The school newsletter states that the excavating at the school house is progressing nicely. Was this in preparation for placing the basement under the school? The Greenwood School News December 1, 1935 - page 8 William Henry Dotson assumes the ownership of Dotson’s store in Greenwood on November 1, 1935. The following parties gave consent to this transfer. Ira & Ethel Dotson, Mary Lillian & W.R. Dotson, Ella K. & H.K. Hewitt, Gussie E. & C.H. Waldo and Edith & C.O. Halterman. Book 94, Page 151 - 155 November 1, 1935 Doddridge County The school newsletter states that they are moving the school building back to its new location and have drilled a new water well. The Greenwood School News March 1, 1936 - page 8 Francis Jerleen (Jerleen) Dotson passed to the other side on April 21, 1936. His parents were Michael and Eliza Davis Dotson. He is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery. Book 4 Page 45 Doddridge County Lulu & M.E. Dotson sold property located in Greenwood on June 3, 1936, to Fred Kiger for $250. The deed states that the Tripple Oil Company already owned an adjoining lot. Book 89, Page 7 July 6, 1936 Doddridge County The store of W.H. Dotson was built by Rex Collins in 1938. At one time there was an inscription above the door that read “Built by Rex Collins 1938 for W.H. Dotson”. Dotson Land Grants by James M. Dotson Page 68 Charles Porter DeBrular loaned W.H. Book 5 Page 42 Doddridge County William Anthony Mason passed to the others side on May 10, 1939. His parents were Jacob A. Mason and Jane Wilson. Book 5, Page 110 Doddridge County The store of Victor Ellifritt was broken into on June 11, 1939. All the tax pennies ($4.00) were taken. From the Diary of Nancy Clark Dotson 1904 – 1946 Page 418 Grandpa Jones & Grandsons performed at the school on October 23, 1939 and again on January 9, 1942. Burial was at Salem and the ministers were Rev Hollingsworth and C.L. Sayre. From the Diary of Nancy Clark Dotson 1904 - 1946 Page 453 There was a dinner at the Greenwood School for retired Hope employees on September 11, 1940. Most likely it was the Ladies Aid Society that served the meal. They cleared $25.00. The Carnegie Natural Gas company also held their yearly dinners here. From the Diary of Nancy Clark Dotson 1904 - 1946 Page 457 Addie Jane Pickens passed to the other side on March 18, 1941. This record shows that she was a Practical Nurse and was born in Harrisville. She was a mid-wife and delivered many of the babies in this area. Her parents were John and Mary Wells Cornell. She was buried in the Greenwood cemetery on March 21, 1941. The record shows that she was a widow. Book 5, Page 134 Doddridge County Some members of the community painted the Greenwood school on July 15 -18, 1941. From the Diary of Nancy Clark Dotson 1904 - 1946 Page 479 Apparently the small park on Greenwood Hill was started by Frank Dotson. The State Road approached Frank on August 4, 1941 about decorating the park. Ray Hudkins was the State Road Commissioner in Doddridge County during this period. From the Diary of Frank and Nancy Clark Dotson 1904 - 1946 Page 531 Edwin Darnell left for military service on April 6, 1943. From the Diary of Nancy Clark Dotson 1904 - 1946 Page 532 Harry 'Pete' Lewis passed away at St. Mary's Hospital in Clarksburg on May 18, 1943 at 4:30 pm. From the Diary of Nancy Clark Dotson 1904 - 1946 Page 535 The funeral for Harry 'Pete' Lewis was held at Ellenboro in the M.E. Church and burial was in Greenwood cemetery on May 21, 1943. Harold and Lenora lived in Columbus, Ohio and most likely Lenora was from that area. It was an evening wedding. A reception was held at home when the bride & groom returned. Book 15, Page 383 Doddridge County The home of Boyd & Love Maxwell burned down on March 5, 1946. They lost everything. From the Diary of Nancy Clark Dotson 1904 - 1946 Page 614 The store of Mr Payetts (service station) was broken into on March 5 1946. From the Diary of Nancy Clark Dotson 1904 - 1946 Page 614 Ora Emerson Doak and Rowena Elane Wells were married on April 10, 1946. Book 15, Page 395 Doddridge County The 1st Pennsboro Fair after the war was held in August 1946. From the Diary of Nancy Clark Dotson 1904 - 1946 Page 624 Paul Hitchcock died on October 11, 1946. He was aged 47 yrs, 8 mo, and 3 days at his passing and was born on February 8, 1899. His occupation was that of a filling station operator in Greenwood. His parents were William J. Hitchcock and Maude Lambert. Book 5, Page 78-A Doddridge County Franklin Pierce Dotson passed away at 4:30 am on October 28, 1946 and went to his other home he had been longing for weeks. Now he is at rest. The body was prepared by Corb Smith of West Union and returned to the home on October 29, 1946. The funeral service was held at the Greenwood Church with the burial at Duckworth Summit. From the Diary of Nancy Clark Dotson 1904 - 1946 Thus ends the diary of Nancy 'Nan' Clark Dotson. It consisted of 1,688 handwritten pages Barr Wilson transcribed the diary into 628 pages. Ernest Dotson is buried at Duckworth Summit beside his parents. Clyde & Edna Dotson are at rest in the Duckworth cemetery. The will Of Reginald Rochester Dotson states that S.H. (Harve) Dilly was to be given $500 at his passing. The will also states that Harve was living with them at the time. Will Book 3, Page 487 Date March 20, 1935 Doddridge County John and Jennie Peaytt sold the Greenwood service station, inventory, related equipment and 3 tracts of property to Delbert W. Wilson on May 12, 1947. Book 110, Page 479, May 13, 1947 Doddridge County Andrew Doak and Olive Wells were married on May 21, 1949. Book 16, Page 170 Doddridge County Hiram Henry passed away on September 24, 1952. He was aged 88 yrs, 1 mo and 17 days and J.C. Smith provided the service. Book 5 Page 76 Doddridge County Delbert W. and Madge Wilson sold the Greenwood service station and 3 tracts of property to Charles Brady and Oma DeBrular on November 29, 1952 for $4,000. Book 123 Page 32, December 1, 1952 Doddridge County Lulu S. Dotson passed away on August 8, 1953. She was born on October 11, 1862 and aged 92 yr, 10 mo, 28 days at her passing. Her parents were E.H. O’Donnell and Susan Smith and she is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery. Book 5 Page 44-D Doddridge County Leroy Doak and Shirley Kay Garner were married on February 14, 1953. Book 16 Page 464 Doddridge County John Thomas Doyle passed away on November 14, 1953. He was born in Toll Gate on July 23, 1884 and his parents were Michael Doyle and Mary Ellen Hunt. He was aged 69 yrs, 3 mo, 21 days at his passing and in buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Pennsboro. Book 5 Page 44-E Doddridge County Ernest Delmont Dotson Passed away on April 3, 1954. He is buried in the Duckworth Cemetery. He worked for the B&O railroad and his occupation was that of a mail clerk and he lived with Leonard and at the family home in Greenwood. His parents were Franklin Pierce and Nancy Clark Dotson. Ernest never married. Book 5 Page 44-E Doddridge County Charles Brady and Oma DeBrular sold the Greenwood service station and 3 tracts of property to James R. and Juretha Crites on May 17, 1956. Book 128 Page 570, May 17, 1956 Doddridge County Frank Victor Dotson died June 17, 1956. He was born in Kansas and his occupation was that of a carpenter. Joe Ellefritt told that he worked for the Carnegie Gas Co. He was widowed and aged 81 years at his passing. He is at rest in the Greenwood Cemetery.
