For Immediate Release: by Barbara Gain

West Union, WV - The Town of West Union, West Virginia has requested a Proclamation from the office of Governor Joe Manchin III, the 34th Governor of West Virginia, declaring June 21, Nathan Davis Day.

Nathan Davis, born June 21, 1772 was Ephraim Bee’s brother in law. He moved to Lewisport West Virginia in 1807 when he and his brothers, Joseph and William acquired 20,000 acres of land just west of Lewisport.

On April 17,1845, the first town meeting was held at the home of Nathan and his wife Jane.

In 1881, when Lewisport became incorporated, the name of Union was proposed. Nathan named his land West Union because it was west of the town trying to change it’s name to Union. At this time, the little town was made up of six families.

Nathan Davis died on May 23, 1866.

Davis’ Town of West Union is having a Festival July 22, 2006 in honor of its 125th Anniversary.
