WV Make it Shine - in Doddridge 2008

April 5, 2008 These people gave up their Saturday for community service!

Shirley Williams / Gilbert Neely / Monte Tremont / Stan Webb / Lesley Partite / Shirley Williams / Joe Bunting / Jim and Jackie Bonnell and granddaughter Jackie / Ralph Dillon / Sheila Sutton / Ernie / Betty and Harold Curtis / Paul Martin / Charles and Marjorie Northrop / Sara Matlack / Roxanne and E J Fritz and Raine / Janet Sheets / A J and Lorena Hardy / Richard Beck / Dottie Piggott / John Michels  (these names are incomplete and in no special order other than the order that I ran into them working)

Many special thanks to the Elders from the LDS Church (we worked them to death<G>), The Master Gardeners for their turn-out and promise of continued volunteer hours planting on the Rail Trail and Middle Island Creek banks / Doddridge County Humane Society for their marvelous turn-out and support in getting the word out

There were so many (at least 30 people that I know of) that worked and I didn't get their names - please email fran.stewart@gmail.com with the additional names -it would be very appreciated!  And if any have more photos - please let us know.  So many were working in different areas:

  • Trash was picked up from Smithton Depot to the Main Street bike rack on the Rail Trail;
  • Route 18 was picked up from Rt 50 to below Howard’s Carpet;
  • the Creek banks were picked up down to where it became back yards in West Union;
  •
  • and the Town Park was cleaned; all of that silt was dug off of the small sidewalk next to the Farmers' Market; a culvert was dug out to remove that standing water by the playground; the playground equipment was painted - oh, MORE than just painted - it is BEAUTIFUL

This year, the WV Make it Shine program paid for the trucks, dumping fees, trash bags and gloves for the day and will possibly do it again for a day next spring.  Thank you!  As you can see from the photos, WV DOH and DEP were very supportive!

Doddridge County Solid Waste Authority donated water and sodas for the day's volunteers, and Spurgeon Funeral Home donated cookies.  Many volunteers donated desserts to share.  Hap Farr provided a worker and gas for the pick-up.  Virginia Nicholson promoted this day and got the word out through the Herald Record. Thanks to the Clarksburg Exponent-Telegram also for publicizing us.   Shirley Williams provided that large wooden sign at Rt 18 and Main Street along with much organization.  Thanks to Gilbert Neely for the music!!  (Does make work go faster, doesn't it? <G>)  Thank you to West Union Water Plant for the storing and delivering of our equipment and checking on us during their busy work-day!
